Zoogeography              Announcements        Winter Term 2 – 2020

March 13

Please check here for updates on changes in course plans due to COVID-19 precautionary procedures. We will be holding our tutorial session today (Friday March 13th) and at this time have not received any announcement regarding university closures or class cancellations.

We are, however, preparing to hold lectures online and are working to make audio lectures available. This is a serious and ever-changing situation, and we're trying to respond promptly with as much information and guidance as possible to maintain a positive learning environment and help you complete the course.

We emphasize that students are advised to stay home if you are feeling sick. There will be no penalties for missing classes or tutorials. Please contact me and Mannfred via email regarding any concerns you have about assignments.

Thank you for your patience, and stay safe and healthy!

March 16

As of Monday March 16th, 2020, we are moving all classes to online format.
All classes from this point forward will be online only and students are expected to attend remotely.

You can access all class materials, including powerpoint files and assignments through
the other links on our Zoogeography course website.

During our scheduled class times on Monday, Wednesday and for Friday tutorials,
we will hold online classes using Zoom. You will be able to join each new
Zoom meeting by clicking on a URL that I share with you.

All assignments from tutorials should be submitted by email to Mannfred.

Final papers are still due on April 10th by 4pm, which can be submitted via email to me. jankowsk(at)biodiversity(dot)ubc(dot)ca

We have yet to decide how the final exam will be conducted for the course.
Most likely this will be a take home exam with a certain time period to complete it.
Please stay tuned for updates.

Here are slides from our presentation and review of the term paper structure,
which may be useful as you're writing up your draft.

UPDATE for Assignment 8:
We have decided to make this assignment optional! If you submit it, the score for this assignment
will replace the score of your lowest assignment. You will not be penalized for submitting this assignment
(i.e., if you receive a score lower than that of your lowest assignment, this assignment score will be discarded)

Our discussion will proceed online on Friday as planned!

Our NEW Final Exam protocol for BIOL 413 is as follows:

The following two options are being given to all students
(so you do not need to choose if you are writing the final exam)

We will calculate grades based on two alternative grading schemes:

The first follows our current marking breakdown for the course, as shown on the syllabus:
Assignments 25%; Mid-term Exam 20%; Term Paper 30%; Final Exam 25%

The second weights the final exam at 5% of the course grade and adjusts other
components of the course accordingly:
Assignments 35%; Mid-term Exam 25%; Term Paper 35%; Final Exam 5%

We will calculate your grades with both options, and you will be given the
best of those two options. If you do not write the final exam, the most to lose is 5%.

After seeing your final grades, you will still have the option to choose Cr/D/F or W option by applying for those options with Science Advising until May 6th.

April 6

TWO IMPORTANT UPDATES:

1) The deadline for your final term paper is extended from April 10th to April 14th
(If possible, please try to submit your paper by the original deadline, so that Manny and I
can begin marking them, but know that you now have until the 14th to finish and submit it!)

2) The final exam for this course will be made available to download starting on April 20th.
You will have from that time until 4pm on April 24th to complete the exam
(so it will be due at the same time the normal exam would have ended, but you'll have this block of time to complete and submit the exam). This will not change the exam length or format
(it will have the same format as the midterm exam, but will be comprehensive and slightly longer in number of questions than the midterm)
