Hummingbird Exceed

Hummingbird Exceed is a good commercial package which lets you log on to a remote Unix X-terminal over the Internet and work as if you were right there. The only limitation (I think) is the speed of your connection. Even over my 56kbps modem it is still very slow. But the advantage of being able to run graphical programs such as GhostScript (gs) and Maple V (xmaple) more than makes up for it.

Unfortunately Exceed stopped working for me for a few months and I finally decided to do some research to see what the problem was. I thought I better post it so I don't forget and in case anybody else is having the same problem. All discussion is regarding Exceed 5 for Windows 95.

Problem: Whenever I try to run Exceed to connect I get the message

    Fatal error: XDM session declined

and then Exceed hangs. What's going on? How can I get it working again?

Solution: I had this problem. Everything seemed to be working okay and then (after a hardware upgrade) it just stopped working. I found a reference on the web which led me to try the following:

Run Xconfig and select Communication. Choose Mode: XDMCP-query then hit Configure.... Now, this is the important bit...check the Key: field. If it says xdmkey then delete this value. I have no idea what this does but when I cleared it, everything started working just fine! Finally, save all your changes and try again. Good luck!
