While the physical composition and architecture of synapses have been extensively explored, the mechanisms that control synaptic gene expression are unclear. We have recently discovered a novel transcriptional program, controlled by neuronal activity, which drives synaptogenesis. This work was among the first to demonstrate a link between activity and developmental transcription factors to sculpt synapse formation in vivo. We are currently leveraging the molecular and cell biology tools we have built to perform unbiased omics and mechanistic genetic studies to discover fundamental mechanisms that control synaptic gene expression at the resolution of a single neuron.
