The new lab computer is up and running.

  1. The computer runs Windows 2000, which requires a separate login for each user. Contact Deanna or Dolph to have an account set up in your name; your password will be "login". Change your password once you are in.

  2. Deanna and I have superuser accounts, and can install programs, etc. You may not be able to install many programs. If you need to install a program and can't, ask Dolph or Deanna to help.

  3. Store any files of your own in your "MyDocuments" folder and subfolders. That way each user's directory space is contained.

  4. Please do not use Eudora or Outlook (or other PC programs) to read your email. With multiple users the risk of downloading an email virus is too high. Use PINE on the Zoology Server, or Yahoo (etc) to read and send mail.

  5. The first time you run Internet Explorer it will ask you to set up an internet account. The easiest thing to do at this point is to go along with it. Select those options involving a LAN (Local Area Network), and click "No" when asked if you want to set up a personal internet/email account. Don't change any of the other default options. This should work.

  6. If you have a Zoology account you can access your files on the server and also use the network printers: Double click the "Network Neighborhood" icon on the desktop, and in the window that opens, double click "Computers Near Me". Then click "Zoology_server (you will be prompted for your Zoology account name and password). Finally, click the folder bearing your account name (you may want to create a shortcut to this folder on the desktop). At this point you can drag and drop files between the computer and your directories on the Zoology server. This is a good way to back up your work (use the CD-RW instead if your files are large). After logging into the server you will be able to print files.

  7. The CD slot is a CD Reader/Writer. If you write to the CD you will probably be able to read it in any other computer (but check before you backup routinely in this way). The best thing to do is format a CD-RW disk (instead of a CD-R disk). Thereafter you can drag and drop files between the CD and the computer.
