Order Hemiptera:
suborder Sternorrhyncha
Recognition of Sternorrhyncha
The Sternorrhyncha are distinguished from other hemipteran by the following combination of characters:
- Mouthparts arising from the back of the head capsule, no sclerotized gula separating the base of the labium from the hind margin of the head capsule [shared with Archeorrhyncha and Clypeorrhyncha; gula present in Prosorrhyncha]; base of labium at least in part between the fore-coxa
[anterior to the coxae in Archeorrhyncha and Clypeorhyncha; at front of head in Prosorrhyncha]
(mouthparts missing in male scale insects and in sexual forms of the aphid families Pemphigidae and Hormaphididae).
- Tarsi with 1 or 2 articles (rarely absent)
[3 in Archeorrhyncha and Clypeorhyncha, 2 or 3 in Prosorrhyncha].
- Antennal flagellum not markedly thin and bristle-like
(but distal article of Aphidoidea with a slender extension, sometimes quite long).
