Phylloxerans and adelgids or woolly conifer gall aphids
The phylloxerans and adelgids may be recognized by the following features:
- Sclerotized ovipositor present or vestigial.
- Parthenogenetic females as well as sexual females are oviparous.
- Siphunculi absent..
- Forewing without a radial sector vein arising from the posterior margin of the pterostigma.
and 3 unbranched transverse veins arising from the common longitudinal vein (media, first cubitus, second cubitus) or the two cubital veins with a common stem portion
(or their projections intersecting if not traceable to the base).
Media never branched.
- Antennal flagellum usually with 1 to 3 articles, depending on group, morph and instar.
Last flagellomere without slender terminal process.
Primary and secondary rhinaria not differentiated (apterae and larvae may have no rhinaria).
