The Jamie Smith Field Course Award will be awarded for the first time in the spring of 2006. Jamie Smith taught at UBC for 32 years and was one of the first faculty members to teach the Zoology field course. Attending a field course in Virginia when he was an undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh was a very valued experience for him and he was a devoted field ecologist. This $1000 award was established following his death in 2005 and will be given to a student who is attending a summer field course either as part of Zoology 409 or at a field station such as Bamfield. To apply for the award students should submit a cv and write a one to two page statement of why they want to take the field course and how this award will facilitate their being able to do so. Applications should be submitted to the graduate secretary in the Department of Zoology by 1 May 2006 and will be reviewed and evaluated by a small committee under the auspices of the Department of Zoology. |
