We study basic aspects of the control of breathing as well as the cardio-respiratory physiology of animals living in extreme environments

My lab has two main focuses. One group of studies is directed at determining the physiological adaptations that individual species possess that allow them to live in different environments. In particular we study respiratory, cardiovascular, thermoregulatory and metabolic adaptations for life in environments with low / high levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, temperature, food and water. We are particularly interested in the neural control of these processes. Another group of studies is directed at determining evolutionary trends in the control of breathing, particularly the role of different chemo and mechano-receptor groups in the control of breathing pattern.
