I study social evolution in viruses. Although we don’t usually think of viruses as social, they’ve evolved a variety of social behaviors, from cooperatively sharing proteins inside a host cell to stealing proteins produced by other viruses. I use experimental evolution and bacteriophages (Inovirus) to study how these thieving viruses, or “cheats”, affect virus population dynamics and coevolve with cooperative viruses.
