Species at Risk

Various threespine stickleback populations in British Columbia are threatened or endangered. The limnetic-benthic species pair in Hadley Lake, Lasqueti Island, is now extinct. The limnetic-benthic species pair in Enos Lake, Vancouver Island, is all but extinct. Both tragedies were associated with invasive species. Remaining species pairs appear to be healthy but require protection and regular monitoring.

One of the requirements under SARA (the Species at Risk Act), now in effect, is the development of a “recovery plan” for all threatened or endangered species, and a “management plan” for species of special concern. The plans should review all available scientific evidence and make science-based recommendations for conservation and recovery. The Recovery Team for Non-game Freshwater Fish in British Columbia was set up to provide such advice on a number of freshwater fish species native to British Columbia.
