Secure Login to Zoology Servers |
To make an SSH (secure) connection to the Zoology server, you need a Zoology account and an SSH program. While there are numerous programs available, the most common ones are outlined below.
Download the newest version at the official site or the Version Tracker website.
PuTTY does not require an installation process - when you download the program, you end up with the executable. You can place the executable program anywhere - on your desktop, in your Program Files directory on C:\ drive, or any other directory. For easy access to the program, you can create a shortcut to PuTTY on your desktop if you have placed the executable elsewhere.
To run PuTTY, double click on the PuTTY icon. You will be presented with a basic configuration window. Set the hostname field to zoology.ubc.ca and the protocol to SSH (the port field should already be set to 22). No other options need to be changed from the default ones. Click on the Open button and a terminal window will appear, asking you to log on with your Zoology username and password, just as before. Now you are ready to use Pine and other Unix commands.
Note: The first time you establish a connection, you will get a security alert message asking you to accept the server's host key. Click on the Yes button to proceed.
You can also save this session by typing in "Zoology" under saved sessions, and clicking on the Save button. This will allow you to speed up your logon process by simply double clicking on "Zoology" in the Saved Sessions. This also allows your Terminal preferences (like fonts, colours etc.) to be saved.

Download the newest version at ssh.com, or from their FTP site http://ftp.ssh.com/pub/ssh/SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe.
Double click on the executable file you just downloaded and follow the installation wizard. Once installed, the program will add shortcuts to your Start Menu and to your desktop. Double click on the SSH Secure Shell icon on your desktop. When the terminal window appears, press either the space bar or the enter key on your keyboard and the connection window will appear. In the hostname field type zoology.ubc.ca, and your username in the username field. The port should already be set to 22. Now click on the Connect button and you can use Pine and Unix commands as before.
Note: The first time you establish a connection, you will get a security alert message asking you to accept the server's host key. Click on the Accept&Save button to proceed.
All versions of OS X come with a built in SSH client. Open up your Terminal application (Applications->Utilities) and type in ssh yourname@zoology.ubc.ca where yourname represents your zoology username. Type in your zoology password and now you can use Pine and Unix commands as before.
Note: The first time you establish a connection, you will get a security alert message asking you to accept the server's host key. Type in yes in the prompt and press enter to proceed.
Download version 1.1 at http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh.
The downloaded file should immediately unpackage itself and create a folder on your desktop called NiftyTelnet-1.1-ssh. Open the folder and double click on NiftyTelnet 1.1 SSH r3 to run it. From the File menu, select New Connection. Once the window opens, click on the New button. In the shortcut name field type in Zoology, and in the hostname field type in zoology.ubc.ca. Set the Protocol to SSH - 3DES and click on OK. The Zoology connection will now appear in your Shortcuts box. Select it and click on the Connect button. Type in your username and password and you can use Pine and Unix commands as before.
Note: The first time you establish a connection, you will get a security alert message asking you to accept the server's host key. Click on the Accept&Save button to proceed.
