MIRANDA
WITHEFORD RICHTER
Graduate Student, Neuroscience
I am interested in the regenerative and neurogenic capacity of the
adult Central Nervous System (CNS). More specifically, I am interested
in how some areas of the adult CNS are able to undergo neurogenesis,
how this capacity relates to a recapitulation of development, and
what role a specialized environment plays in preserving this function.
To this end, I am studying both glial:glial and neuronal:glial interactions
in spinal cord injury and in the olfactory system. Specifically,
I have been examining the capacity of olfactory ensheathing cells
derived from the lamina propria of the olfactory mucosa to promote
a reorganization of the glial scar, which forms after spinal cord
injury, as well as analyzing the regeneration-enhancing properties
of these cells.
