Darwin Day Celebrations and the CSEE

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth.  In celebration of the scientist who brought us the theory of biological evolution via natural selection, Darwin Day festivities are being held on or around February 12 marking the day Charles Darwin was born in 1809. Several events are being organized by members of the CSEE in communities around Canada.

In Vancouver, CSEE members Dr. Rosie Redfield, Dr. Arne Mooers and Rowan Barrett are part of a group of scientists organizing the Vancouver Evolution Festival, a series of events throughout the year to explore Darwin's many contributions to science, the latest findings in evolution & biodiversity, and the profound implications of these discoveries for society today.

CSEE Councillor Dr. Andrew Hendry will be busy promoting the importance of Darwin's discoveries at a symposium for high-school students at 12:15 pm on March 3, 2009 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, Ontario.

CSEE members and Université de Sherbrooke professors,  Dr. Fanie Pelletier and Dr. Dany Garant will be participating in public lectures at the Musée des Sciences in Sherbrooke discussing Darwin's voyage on the Beagle and the theory of evolution. These lectures are part of a series of talks entitled ''In the footsteps of Darwin'' being held at the museum on February 12, 2009, starting at 7:00pm (birthday cake will be provided).

Darwin Day celebrations promise to be a fun and educational way to learn more about the importance of evolution and celebrate scientific discovery.  For evolutionary biologists, these festivities also represent a great opportunity to teach someone about evolution in your community. Are you celebrating Darwin's birthday? Let us know and we'll write about it here! Contact: Rowan Barrett (rbarrett@zoology.ubc.ca)

CSEE president organizing International Polar Year & Climate Change Symposium encourages Young Scholars to Participate in Dialogue

(December 8, 2008 –Lakehead University office of communications, Thunder Bay, ON)

The polar north, Canada's last frontier, is experiencing an unprecedented transformation.  The polar sea is thawing, opening up the Arctic Ocean to ice-free conditions for longer and longer periods. Understanding the consequences of these transformations, especially those related to global warming, are a main focus of scientific inquiry as significant changes are sure to have a major effect on global conditions.

International Polar Year (IPY), a large scientific programme centred on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009, has galvanized polar research around the globe. Organized through the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it involves over 200 projects (several led by Canadians), with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological, and social research topics. The aim is to educate and involve the public, and to help train the next generation of engineers, scientists, and leaders.

On March 6 and 7, 2009, the Centre for Northern Studies at Lakehead University will commemorate IPY with a two-day national symposium and poster session on "the ecological and evolutionary implications of climate change." The Canadian Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Toronto has joined with the Centre for Northern Studies as a junior sponsor for the event.  The symposium, organized by Lakehead's Research Chair in Northern Studies, and president of the Canadian Society of Ecology and Evolution, Dr. Douglas Morris, "will highlight Lakehead University's position as a leader in northern research," says the Chair of the Northern Studies Committee, Dr. Harvey Lemelin. "The symposium will begin on Friday, March 6, 2009 with a morning poster session on northern research, followed by a welcome address, and a scientific plenary session showcasing six of Canada's most acclaimed scientists involved in northern ecological research."

A public evening session entitled "Perspectives on ecology and evolution under global warming" will be opened to the public as well as local and national media. This session will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a social gathering, where participants will be encouraged to engage in dialogue with the keynote speakers.

On Saturday, March 7, 2009, graduate students from seven Canadian universities will present and discuss their research. This session will be followed by a workshop aimed at determining future priorities for Arctic research.

People of a Feather and The Arctic Sea Ice project

People of a Feather and The Arctic Sea Ice project is an interdisciplinary education and outreach initiative that combines Inuit, scientific and filmmaking approaches to document and broadly disseminate knowledge about sea ice ecosystems and environmental change in the Arctic. The outreach project evolved from the use of multi-media techniques (video and timelapse photography) to quantify sea ice dynamics and associated wildlife winter ecology. Our objective under funding from International Polar Year is to use existing materials, field infrastructure and high definition production capacity to complete and broadly distribute a feature documentary (People of a Feather) and a multi-media educational package (The Arctic Sea Ice) for schools, interpretation centers and independent

study. Due to an interdisciplinary approach, the project also includes

training and capacity for a multi-scale community-based research and

monitoring program. This project is currently in production by CSEE member Joel Heath.
