This is a graduate-level course directed at incoming graduate students in ecology and evolution. The course provides a broad survey of important and current concepts in the field of ecology and teaches skills essential for ecologists. Guest speakers will be brought in from a variety of departments including Botany, Zoology, Forestry, Philosophy and Fisheries who will present a talk and discuss their research with the students. Students will develop oral and written skills in order to communicate scientific material in an effective and dynamic manner. Additional topics such as data analysis, peer review and project management may be included in the course depending on the students' interests. Assessment is on the basis of oral presentations, written assignments and class discussions. We also encourage PhD students who are preparing for their comps to audit this course to practice their critical thinking and obtain knowledge about current issues in ecology and evolution.

Instructors: Dr. Pavel Kratina (Fall Semester) and Dr. Jana Petermann (Spring Semester)

September 2010 - April 2011 (6 credits)
Monday and Friday 9-11 am, Biodiversity Centre, room 303

Students are also expected to attend the weekly Biodiversity Research Seminar on Wednesday 12 pm, AERL auditorium.
