THE SKULL
The skull consists of 29 bones. These may be considered in 3 functional groups:
- 1. The cranium
- 8 bones which enclose and protect the brain
- 2. The facial bones
- 14 bones which support the face,
bear the teeth, give protection to special sense organs (eye, nose) and
provide attachment for muscles that move the jaw.
- 3. Others
- the single hyoid bone which supports the larynx (voice box),
and 3 pairs of ear ossicles in the middle ear which
transmit sound waves to the inner ear.
