The ZCU has 2 classes of member: free and full. Free membership allows access to the Zoology servers for electronic communications: e-mail, web and internet newsgroups. These services are available only via network connections. Free members do not enjoy hands-on access to our computers, printers, loaner equipment, or other benefits.
Full membership currently costs $100 per year. Printing charges are extra, and are 7 cents per page on monochrome printers and 20 cents per page on the colour printer ("Rainbow"). There are currently no set quotas for any resource. Here is the application form. Benefits include:
The ZCU-maintained ZooLab is a Faculty of
Science homework lab for undergraduates. The exception, it requires
neither a free nor a full membership. Printing in ZooLab costs 12
cents per page, using a Zoology Printing Card which can be purchased at
CopyRight in the Student Union Building.
The Zoology Computing Unit follows the guidelines laid out by UBC's
Responsible Use of
Information Technology PDF file.
We have a one person per ID policy for reasons of assigning
responsibility to internet access and appropriate use. Other than
protection of your private information, this is a big reason for
keeping your password to yourself, and choosing a password that is
difficult to guess.
Programs produced using ZCU facilities must be made available to
the Computing Unit Library on request, accompanied by adequate
documentation. Under no circumstances may they be sold commercially.
The following are grounds for having computing privileges revoked: The Zoology Computing Unit equipment runs all day, every day.
There is no regularly scheduled downtime. That is scheduled when
maintenance or repair needs arise.
The buildings are locked after 6pm weekdays, and on weekends. They
are unlocked at 7am on weekdays. The computer rooms themselves are
also locked. Any full member can get authorization to obtain keys for
after-hour access to the facilities. Please be sure to lock the doors
to ZCU computer rooms if you are the last to leave them after-hours,
and set the alarm.
Wired and wireless ethernet connections are available throughout the
Biological Sciences Building and the B Huts. A wired connection
requires an available wall jack and a completed ethernet registration
form. Just fill out this form and drop it off in the
ZCU mailbox, room 2370. Once your computer is
known to our servers, it will work in wall jacks all over the
department -- there is no need to reconfigure, or to
notify us, if you move your computer.
Wireless connectivity is managed by UBC's IT Services. To use it
you need a wireless ethernet card in your computer and a Campus-Wide
Login (CWL) account. Please see
http://www.wireless.ubc.ca/main.html for complete information.
One can dial into the ZCU directly, or indirectly. There are 2
direct lines at the numbers 604-822-0986, 604-822-0987.
None of these support connections that allow
graphical web browsing, ssh or FTP connections. They are simply
character-based connections, useful for checking e-mail (e.g. with
pine), text-only web browsing (e.g. with lynx), and reading Internet
newsgroups (e.g. with tin). This level of service is deliberate. Connections
with more services are available for free via IT Services (see
below). Run
a terminal emulator on your computer (Hyperterminal on Windows, Kermit
on anything) and have it dial one of the above numbers.
All graduate students are entitled to a free
Netinfo account offered through
UBC's IT Services. Faculty and staff are entitled to free
Interchange-For-All
accounts, which are similar. Faculty and staff wanting an IFA-5
account should contact Alistair Blachford, rather than IT Services. Netinfo
accounts include 20 hours of dial-in time per month, and IFA-5
accounts have 5 free hours of dial-in time per month.
One can use such an account to gain a dial-in connection to
the Internet, and then have your e-mail, secure-shell or FTP software connect
to the Zoology servers, if you choose. Use their dial-in and connect
settings, but set up your e-mail, secure-shell and FTP programs with the
settings below.
