The Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia has a broad array of research programs in marine, aquatic, and fisheries biology. These research areas are strengthened by our close links with the Bamfield Marine Station, Vancouver Aquarium, West Vancouver Lab, and the Fisheries Centre. Research interests range from trophic interactions in aquatic communities to social interactions among marine mammals. Several investigators within the department explore the impact of human development and harvesting on aquatic and marine systems and apply their findings to the management of aquatic and marine resources. Specific research interests include:

Tom Carefoot: Studies on the physiological ecology of marine invertebrates.
Bob Devlin: Transgenic manipulation of endocrine systems in salmon.

E. Donaldson: Endocrine aspects of sex differentiation, ovulation, growth and stress in fish.

John Ford: Behavioural ecology, social dynamics and acoustic behaviour of cetaceans.
Michael Healey: Ecology and behaviour of salmonid fishes as it relates to ecological theory and resource management.
David R. Jones: Behavioural and metabolic physiology of diving mammals, birds and reptiles.
Brian Leander: Evolutionary morphology, molecular phylogeny and biodiversity of marine micro-eukaryotes
Bill Neill: Structure and dynamics of freshwater communities.
Daniel Pauly: Ecological impacts of fisheries and ecosystem management.
Tony Pitcher: Fisheries evaluation; fish behaviour; assessment and management of fisheries.
Rashid Sumaila: Fisheries economics and management.
Patricia Schulte: Gene regulation and the evolution of physiological responses to environmental change.
Eric (Rick) Taylor: Molecular approaches to the evolutionary ecology, population genetics, and conservation of fishes.
Andrew Trites: Population biology and bioenergetics of Steller sea lions; interactions between marine mammals and commercial fisheries.
Amanda Vincent: Conservation and management of seahorse populations.
Carl Walters: Applied ecology and fisheries management.
