John Douglas Steeves was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1952. He completed his doctorate (Neuroscience / Physiology) from the University of Manitoba, School of Medicine in 1978 and then completed a fellowship at the University of Alberta. Dr. Steeves was first appointed as an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver in 1979 and has been a full professor since 1992 in the Departments of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, Surgery (Neurosurgery) and Zoology at UBC and Vancouver Coastal Health Research institute (part of Vancouver Coastal Health).
