My specialty is the taxonomy, systematics, and biodiversity of aquatic insects, in particular Hemiptera, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, and Plecoptera. Forensic entomology is also an interest.

I have also instructed at University College of the Cariboo (now Thompson Rivers University) and Kwantlen University College. I have presented workshops and programs internally through UBC Continuing Education and TAG, and externally to the Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, the Richmond Nature Park, Lynn Canyon Ecology Center, Everett Crowley Park, VanDusen Botanical Gardens, the Vancouver Natural History Society, and the GVRD. I was also the co-host of a weekly insect show on the Discovery Channel for one television season, and have authored a children’s book on aquatic insects.

I am currently the Past-President of the Entomological Society of British Columbia, after serving one year as Vice-President and one year as President. I have previously served twice as a director of the Society.

I am also a member of the Sessional Faculty Committee of the UBC Faculty Association, a committee which I previously chaired for three years. I have served as a member-at-large of the FA executive, as a member of their Personnel Services Committee, and as their representative to the Canadian Association of University Teacher's Contract Academic Staff committee in Ottawa. In 2006, I helped organize COCAL VII, which brought together 200 academics from three countries to discuss issues surrounding contingent academic labor.

I have been an environmental consultant to the Ministry of Environment, Lands, and Parks, the Corporation of Delta, GVRD Parks, the David Suzuki Foundation, and the Department of National Defense, among others.
