Gamogony - producing male gametes in this instance
A single large cell with a single nucleus undergoes a process of multiple mitosis producing a number of muclei. These nuclei become associated with the periphery of the cell and the apical end of a gamete is organized around each nucleus. As in other flagellates, division proceeds from anterior to posterior so in the second figure we see the anterior ends of gametes emerging from the cytoplasmic mass of the gamont. Finally the daughter cells (gametes) separate to produce free-swimming flagellated gametes (male gametes in this case). In the case of female gamonts, the gametes are round and egg-like. |
